Performing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) MRI can be technically challenging due to the small size and high complexity of the anatomical structures involved. Accurately visualizing the position and movement of the mandibular condyle, ligaments, and articular disc is critical to obtaining diagnostically useful images. It can also be uncomfortable for the patient. The challenges can be addressed by finding alternative solutions using different combinations of coils and optimizing acquisition protocols. In the manuscript we demonstrate how an 18-channel flexible coil (UltraFlex Large 18) provides high image quality. The set-up also increases patient comfort, due to good maneuverability and ease of use.

Images were acquired on a 1.5T MAGNETOM Sola scanner with syngo MR XA51 software and an UltraFlex Large 18 coil.
